Are You Eligible for the
Online NY 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course?
Before enrolling in the 5-Hour Online Pre-Licensing Course, it’s important to confirm your eligibility. This course is officially approved by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYSDMV) and is intended for first-time adult drivers aged 18 and older who hold a valid New York learner permit with a photo.
If you’re planning to take your road test in New York, this course is one of the required steps — but not everyone qualifies for the online version. Here’s what you need to know.
To take this course, you must meet all the following conditions:
Be at least 18 years old at the time of registration
Hold a valid New York State learner permit that includes your photo
Plan to take your road test in New York State
Not currently hold a Class DJ or MJ (junior) learner permit
This course is not available for permit holders under 18 due to NYSDMV restrictions. If you're underage or have a junior permit, you’ll need to take the 5-hour course in person through a high school or other state-approved classroom provider.

Be issued
by the New York State DMV
Contain your
full legal name and photograph
Be current
and unexpired
Temporary or paper permits without a photo are not eligible for this online course. If you haven’t yet received your photo permit in the mail, we recommend waiting to enroll until it arrives.

Are Non-US Citizens Eligible?
Yes — non-US citizens who hold a valid New York State photo learner permit and meet the age requirement can take the online course. You do not need a US Social Security number or citizenship status to enroll.
